If you think it’s been a hot summer, it’s about to get even hotter Sunday night!  After scoring a record-breaking 11.4 million viewers with last year’s show, the 28th Annual MTV Video Music Awards will once again broadcast LIVE from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, CA, Sunday, August 28th starting at 8pm (live ET/Tape Delayed PT).  TV, Music & Movie Stars will have all the winners announced right here for you on Sunday night!

So what’s in store this year with MTV’s Music Video Awards show?  The 2011 spectacle will blast off with the VMA Pre-show. Selena Gomez and a cadre of MTV News correspondents including James Montgomery, Jim Cantiello and Sway Calloway will be live on the VMA Black Carpet reporting breaking news and interviewing presenters, performers and nominees as they enter the Nokia Theatre.

This year’s presenters will include Kim Kardashian, the Odd Future collective, Rapper Rick Ross, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Chris Brown and Young the Giant.  There’s potential for some hilarious scripted and unscripted moments up on stage just like in years past!

Musical performances will include Cobra Starship, Bruno Mars, Young the Giant, new soul sensation, Adele, Chris Brown and rap artist Lil Wayne. If that wasn’t enough star power to fuel a rocket, MTV has saved the best for first.

Last Thursday, August 18th, during MTV’s First: Lady Gaga, the Mama Monster together with her little monster fans announced, that she will be the coveted opening act for the VMA’s. Known for outrageous entrances and even more outrageous sometimes meaty attire, Gaga promised her fans they would not be disappointed. Gaga never disappoints.

Lady Gaga, who took home eight Moonmen last year, is nominated in four categories this year including Best Female Vocalist and Best Video With a Message as well as technical awards for Best Choreography and Best Art Direction for “Judas.”

MTV will debut a “Best Video With a Message” award this year with Pink, Lady Gaga, Katie Perry, Eminem featuring Rhianna, Rise Against and Taylor Swift as its inaugural nominees. The new award, in collaboration with MTV Act, honors artists who have melded their music with social activism addressing bullying, LGBT rights and self-esteem issues.

Katy Perry leads the nominees list poised to take home nine Moonmen. Britain’s Adele and Kanye West follow with seven nominations. Other nominees include Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Bruno Mars and Eminem.

MTV officials also announced tributes to Britney Spears and the late Amy Winehouse.  It’s been rumored that Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato will be part of the Britney Spears tribute show on stage.

With it’s long history of drama, publicity stunts, controversies and alcohol-induced faux paux, this year’s lineup also contains enough potential fuel to blast that Moonman to another universe. MTV fans will not be disappointed.

Check back here starting after 8PM EST on Sunday night.  We’ll have the latest updates on all of the 2011 MTV VMA winners right here!
